Life Cycle of the Plant.  Wisconsin Fast Plants

Consider doing a project where seeds go through the entire life cycle in just 40 days. Students are part of the process by pollinating flowers with bee sticks and saving the seeds that are produced for students to use next year.

I posted the video on my youtube channel.

Using Senses to Explore Pumpkins

Children wonder how the pumpkin and the orange are alike and different, so they feel them with their hands, use their eyes, and their noses. They thump them and listen to the sounds they make and of course, eat them. The following video is a montage of some of the science experiences that children can have in and out of your classroom. (Click on the bottom right rectangle to view the movie in full screen mode and click your esc button to return to the wiki.)

As you begin thinking about science this year, think about how you might set up your science center. Are there hands - on materials that the children can pick up and explore? Are there live animals and plants? Are there books that extend the learning? Do you have writing and drawing materials in the center? Is it inviting? Is it organized in a way that the children know where to put things when cleaning up? Do you plan to change materials, as your units of study change? Do you have scientific tools, like hand lenses, magnets, collecting jars, color paddles, a primary balance, measuring containers, standard and non-standard measuring tools? This is what my science center looked like at the beginning of last year. It was one of the most used centers in my classroom. (Gail):

Science Inquiry, Technology, and Nature Article: Page 1 Page 2 Even though this article is about a group of 5th grade students, it has some applications for all age groups, including Pre-K. The Essential Question for this project: Why is it important to preserve the earth's natural environment?

We began our spring science project by building a worm bin (using Red Wigglers) so that we could harvest the rich "worm poop" or vermicompost. I have had the large earthworms under the doc camera on the Innovation Station so that they could see the segments and learn about the worms other body parts. The children will begin learning more about these wiggly creatures in the next few weeks. Enjoy the short movie. Look below on this same page for a powerpoint on building a worm bin. Hopefully these two multimedia presentations will inspire you to do something kind for the Earth on Earth Day 2010 - the 40th anniversary.

Young children can begin to understand the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing and you, as their teachers, can help. I have inserted an activity and some links for other activities and clip art.  There are many links on this page to other Earth Day activities. Happy Earth Day 2010

Water Pumps are now available at Home Depot...Just purchased several kerosene pumps or siphon pumps (the bulbs are very easy for prek children to squeeze). They are only $2.49 and if you find the Manager of the store, heshe might give you a 50% discount because you are a teacher not getting reimbursed! My students really enjoyed using them today in the water tables...one group filled their table because I didn't want to do the work:) (I was very dramatic when telling them the reason way I didn't fill it. I also showed them several other tools that they had been using - baster, pipet, eyedropper, and a small cup and ask them if these tools would be a good tool to fill up the table. One boy said that it would take 58 hours! He was probably right!) Another group found ways to pump water through their funnels and tubing with more force.  At the end of the day I gave a child the battery powered version (same price) and he had the 2 tables emptied in no time...it really saved me time and gave the children another tool to use. They were very empowered by the experience. I have added a video to my classroom wiki which highlights the exploration of water from the first week through the 3rd week. We will be starting our exploration of the concept of sink and float next week. (Gail Laubenthal  laubenthalladybugs.pbworks.com)

My (Gail Laubenthal) prek students spent a week exploring ICE. I have put the activities and their observations on a powerpoint. The slides are being used in our class science fair project. I hope that the presentation gives you some ideas. We were fortunate to have been doing this during the past freeze event here in Austin. We also froze water outside overnight, but I failed to take a picture of it, but did record their responses...this activity tied nicely into our study of weather, also going on during this time. I welcome feedback.

Water, water, everywhere. Barbara Wilson has graciously shared the following water word wall cards. We are looking for someone to translate them into Spanish and hope to post them soon.

The following powerpoint project was used as a bulletin board display at the end of a unit of study on How Water Can Move. The students in the pictures have AISD Talent Release forms on file at Sanchez Elementary School.

Label the parts of a bean plant (English) Label the parts of a bean plant (Spanish)

If you plant some bean seeds in a clear solo cup (I fold a paper towel several times to fit around the inside of the cup and wad some paper towels and put them in the center of the cup to hold the folded one in place). I usually place 2 -5 beans in each cups and water them when the paper towel dries up. It takes about 3 days to sprout, and 2 weeks to begin seeing the different parts. If you have a school garden you can take the young bean plants to the garden and plant the whole paper towel/bean sprouts. The towel will biodegrade eventually.

Build a worm bin in your classroom and you will have rich vermi-compost to add to your classroom garden. The students in the pictures have AISD Talent Release forms on file at Sanchez Elementary School. Follow these easy steps shared by Gail Laubenthal:

Weather Wiz Kids

This is a wiki that I developed for use over the year.  I wanted to incorporate geography, weather & temperature change over time, seasons, and graphing.  Each student will have a page so I can upload their scanned work and allow student writing and/or commenting. (As of 6/15/09, this is still a work in progress)
